I was just thinking about the similarities between the Pacers and the Magic on my 12-hr drive from Tallahassee back to Nap. I really wished we ran more PickNRoll/Pop like Orlando, mainly b/c we our personnel is closer to them than say, Phoenix, who we try to emulate with our Uptempo Offense.

For this reason among many others, I would endorse a trade of Murphy to Toronto for Turkoglu. He would be perfect to help O'Brien to implement an offense closer to that of Orlando. Many would argue he was the main reason the Magic got to the Finals last year anyway. Throw in a Gordon Hayward or Xavier Henry along with Danny, Brandon, and Mike at the wings... maybe Scottie Reynolds as our 2nd rounder, and we could seriously make some strides toward what Orlando has.

We don't have a LeBron, Kobe, Dwyane, or Kevin who can basically do it all. The NFL's a copycat league, why not the NBA? And why not copy Orlando? Go back over our wins, and most of them were due to us having 4 or 5 or 6 guys in double figures, like the Magic do all the time. Make it happen Larry!

As usual, great work.

I doubt Synergy gives you a ton of historical info., but it would be interesting to watch some of JO'B's Boston and Philly teams play to check up on the PnR stuff. At least in Philly he had Iverson who could run it. In Boston, Anderson, Delk, and Bremer could probably do it also.

One thing that stands out to me as I think about this is that even though the PnR is such a staple of NBA offenses, it's been at least 10 years since the Pacers have had a PG who could run it. That's a bit astounding. I might be slighting Anthony Johnson a bit here, but no one has ever thought of him as a starter.

Also, looking at Roy's shots, my perception, at least, is that Roy is a far better mid to long range jump shooter than Howard or Shaq. Fully developed, I think that Roy could be a Duncan level shooter.

One thing that made me sad about Tyler's injury this season is that I was really looking forward to seeing some High-Low post play with 2 players who could score from either position: Roy and Tyler. I don't know if O'Brien would have used this type of set much, but I think the potential is certainly there.

Thanks for the plug, I'm glad you enjoyed the O'Brien piece! We just did an evaluation of the Pacers defense this season over at IndyCornrows. It is much less detailed and statistically sophisticated than what you did here, but there were some definite surprises.

(For the record, I am just as intimidated by the great work you and Jared do here.)
