I'm sure the Pacers would love to do the Dampier deal, but I can't see it making any sense for Charlotte. Their payroll as of today is $78.1mm, or about $7.8mm OVER the luxury tax threshold. Since I can't see the Pacers giving up a decent asset - like Rush - just to get rid of Ford, a realistic offer (from the Pacers' side) would be Ford + Dahntay.

The problem is - even if Charlotte liked that deal from a talent perspective (Brown probably would, but I don't know that Jordan would) - it leaves them stuck over the tax. If they were to cut Dampier (a certainty if they don't trade him), their payroll would be about $65mm. If they trade him for Ford/Dahntay, their payroll would be $76mm.

That payroll would cost them $5.7mm in tax, plus it would mean that they wouldn't get the distribution of tax money that teams under the tax get (about $3.5mm), plus it would cost them the $11mm in salaries for Ford/Dahntay. So, the question to Charlotte's FO is, "Is acquiring Ford plus Dahntay worth the $20+mm (11+5.7+3.5) that it will cost me."

If I'm sitting in Charlotte, that's an easy "No" for me.

I think they can still do the dampier deal and wave him afterwards saving 8.5 mil in cap space makie room for rolle. While also keeping an eye open fora top shelf power forward who might beavailable like josh smith seeing as how atlanta is moving horfold to power forward leaving no place for smith,I would not think they would like to pay 11.7 mil for a backup, but rather use that money on a true center!
