This statement sums it up.

"But you have to ask yourself — what percentage of NBA actually players sign more than one “big” contract? (Answer: usually only the few that were worth their first big one.)"

That's why I don't care if the players get 75% of BRI. All I want to see is fewer--not necessarily shorter--guaranteed contracts. Sign Kobe for a decade if you want to. They do it in baseball. No more than two or three players on any given team are true stars. The rest of them should feel as though they have to prove themselves each and every game. If they can't do it, they need to get out. No fan base should ever have to suffer another Jamaal Tinsley.

"I’ll bet Rashard Lewis would jump at the chance to go back in time and sign a more reasonable deal"

What are you, high? I agree that I'd be hating on dudes on the roster that are cap killers though.

Great piece though. Doves named Donald Stirling, lol.

Thanks for the excellent piece. Explained many things I didn't understand. My question is this: don't the players feel like Eddy Curry and Rashard Lewis and Arenas' deals etc are terrible for the league? It hamstrings THEIR teams from paying THEM more and allowing THEM to play on better teams. If a dude in my office was a cap killer, I'd want him out and would rather it be easy to get rid of him. So McRoberts choice isn't so obvious, even for his own bottom line. I'll bet Rashard Lewis would jump at the chance to go back in time and sign a more reasonable deal, rather than spend half a decade as a poster boy for poor value.
