Good piece. Just FYI, I believe the total of the 'New Proposed Tax' is actually $171 million and not $161 million. Even more dramatic.....

How about a follow-up now that we know what the players have proposed in a tiered tax system? If Hunter is to be believed, they've suggested $1.25 for each of the first $5 million over the threshold, $1.50 for each of the next $5 million, $1.75 for each of the next $5 million, etc. That would put last year's tax payments, by my reckoning, at $112.9 million under the player's proposal.

Interesting update. Again, I'm not averse to hearing what the players have to say. But, as a fan, I must know how we will put an end to the Jamaal Tinsleys of the world. I'm fine with only the top 150 getting de facto guaranteed contracts. Why do the top 150 want to have their salaries diluted by the bottom 200? As a fan, I want new and fresh blood cycling through the league so that the Pacers can afford to find a gem in the rough. The fresh talent should be nipping at the heels of the big boys and keep them playing hard. So, long as the players--as a group--get their guaranteed revenue split, I'm happy with letting the money flow to the real and emerging talent within that group. As it stands now, too many players enjoy ten year careers (i.e., a couple of guaranteed contracts based on one or two seasons of well-timed performance) who should wash out of the league after their first three years. As a fan, I don't care whose fault it is. I just want it to stop.

SO do the players have an idea how to keep spending roughly equal between teams without a pretty strong cap on salaries? Otherwise only the rich teams will have a decent chance to win. Any agreement between the owners without player approval would be illegal collusion in restraint of trade, which could result in federal criminal suits as well as civil damage suits against the league by individual players. Ultimately the majority of the fans will not accept having no realistic chance at the trophy, so only the players are out of sync with society, even though the fans and the owners presumably have different reasons.
