George Hill’s Contract Revealed: 5 Years, $40 Million

The other day, Mike Wells of the Indianapolis Star informed us that George Hill would be re-signing with the Pacers. Now, according to Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld, we know the contract details: 5 years, $40 million. This is essentially what we expected.

An average salary of $8 million per year is a definitely a little more than anyone should be wanting to pay a 26-year-old who has only started 64 regular-season games as a professional (and just 9 out of 66 played for Indiana). And giving that fifth year to anyone who isn’t an bona fide All-Star candidate every year is always rough. Really, in an ideal world where players always made a salary that directly correlated to their performance, he probably should be making about $6 million per year.

But Hill is well-rounded and skilled enough on both ends of the floor that the deal, which will pay him at least $6.96 million in year one, is unlikely to ever turn into a millstone, barring injury.

Pacers fans would be correct to think this is overpaying a little bit. But that’s the price you pay for not getting an extension done before letting a player you want as a long-term part of your team reach free agency.

@Jared Wade I’m not so sure if he was overpaid to be honest. He was offered a 6 million extension at the beginning of the year. Outperformed his deal and became the starter, and is being paid like one. Good Deal. Very Good Deal

He’s a good shooter (not great but good), tall and smart on both sides. I think it’s the right deal. Maybe we would signed him for 7 per year, but we shouldn’t be mad.

Overpaid by $1 to $1.5 million I would say, but it’s not going to bludgeon the cap. No way they resign Collison though.

He’s as good as Danny, who makes $13M. It’s hard to judge this till I get a sense of what the Pacers want to be moving forward. Right now they look like a holding-pattern team, which is not the end of the world. There is no game-changing player available who will come to us. So, I’d rather sit on the cap space another year.

@ Derek U – I could not agree more. Every time I got on here and read about the off-season moves the Pacers should make, I always read somewhere that Steve Nash is a legit target for the Pacers this year and that the Pacers should pursue him strongly. Now I did read with that that Nash probably doesn’t want to go to a small market team but just the fact that Steve Nash and the Pacers were in the same sentence seemed like a joke to me. Now I don’t know if the Pacers went after Nash at all, but there is no way he would have consider coming here. The same goes for D-Will. I love the Pacers but we have to come to grips with this team never getting a superstar player like those guys in free agency.

With Nash and Williams out of the discussion (not that they were ever really in it), it’s time to move on to the next set of possibilities. Am I alone in thinking that Ryan Anderson would be the perfect guy to come in and be the Pacers’ “James Harden” off the bench? I know he’s an RFA, but there’s got to be a somewhat reasonable number that the Magic won’t match. He’s exactly what that second unit needs to capitalize on starters being off the court.

You know what kudos to the Pacers guys. Instead, of investing large sums of time and money in trying to acquire some of the big names this year. They remained mostly quiet, brought in some free agents for discussions about potential deals, and resigned the guys that matter. Look at teams like Toronto and Houston who were going for Nash and now they’re left in the dust trying to figure out what they’re going to do. Now all we need to do is resign BIG DOG!

Jamal Crawford will be signing with the Clippers according to sources. Another “potential” FA the Pacers should have been pursuing lost to a big market team.

The Pacers still need some scoring off the bench. If OJ Mayo takes a bigger contract elsewhere, which i think he will, I still like Courtney Lee. He is a good shooter and a great defender with playoff experience. If i remember right, he spent a lot of time guarding Kobe in the ’09 Finals as a rookie. That can only help the Pacers against Rondo, Rose, and Wade going forward. It may not be high profile, but it brings high value to the Pacers that makes a lot of sense.

Courtney Lee would be an awesome pickup. I’ve been keeping my eye on him ever since he made all the hustle plays in Orlando’s Playoff run. Given his qualifying offer was withdrawn, he’s now an unrestricted Free Agent. Apparently, George Hill is making a push for the organization to go for him as well.

Frankly, i think Courtney Lee is a much better fit for the Pacers than Mayo or Crawford ever could be. Why? He has always made his teammates better, he doesn’t back down in the big moment, and he has a winning attitude. Hilltoppers? Sweet 16? Loved that! He fits. I hope we bring him in.

@special k — Ugh.. I can’t stand Ryan Anderson. He literally whined to the refs after every single foul call against the Magic when we played them in the playoffs. We don’t want a guy like that. He’s just an okay, whiney white guy. We don’t need that. But we do need one more piece to help the bench scoring situation. But MOST IMPORTANTLY, we must resign Hibbert.

Boston got Lee and Jamal deal off the market to the Clippers, Ray off to Heat, Anderson trade to Hornets, Roy off to the wolves, Nash a laker, Gordon a Sun,Lucas off to the Heat. And by the way the Pacers is sitting on there back bottom side waiting on the Hibbert deal. They are not chasing no real free agents lil confused. So who is left!!!!
