Post-Game Grades: Pacers Edge Lakers on Hill’s Heroics

David West - 36 MIN | 7-15 FG | 10 REB | 8 AST | 16 PTS
He actually was pretty terrible production-wise in the second half (1-for-5 FGs, 2 missed FTs, 4 TOs) but still found a way to contribute (4 dimes, 7 boards). But he was the only thing Indiana had going early. He set the tone and was the one guy stayed aggressive (in a good way) on a night when nobody had anything going.
Paul George - 33 MIN | 5-13 FG | 9 REB | 2 AST | 12 PTS
Leaked out for some easy points in a game where few came that way and generally played some good defense on Kobe, despite Mamba’s 40 points. Still had some poor moments with the ball and missed too many shots, but not a bad effort.
Roy Hibbert - 18 MIN | 4-7 FG | 5 REB | 0 AST | 8 PTS
He was a non-factor for the most part on the offensive end and the glass, but that was mostly due to limited time and foul trouble. But he was a monster on the defensive end was the aggressor every time a Laker came near the rim, forcing them to change their shots or get something sent back. It was especially impressive that he was so willing to protect the hoop even with 4 fouls, making Pau look like the softie people so often claim he is.
George Hill - 7-12 FG | 4-5 FT | 5 REB | 5 AST | 19 PTS
He was bad early and great late. That’ll get you a game ball. Helluva layup.
Lance Stephenson - 29 MIN | 2-8 FG | 4 REB | 4 PTS
Over-dribbled too often. It’s almost as if he watched the animated GIF of him embarrassing Tony Parker a few too many times and was trying to recreate the moment.

Tyler Hansbrough - 12 MIN | 0-2 FG | 3-4 FT | 4 REB | 3 PTS
Not particularly helpful, held the ball and sorta got in the way. Still getting to the line at least.
Sam Young - 18 MIN | 0-4 FG | 4 REB | 1 AST | 0 PTS
Train wreck.
Gerald Green - 16 MIN | 1-8 FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 3 PTS
Two train wrecks. You wonder what’s going through his head at times.
Ian Mahinmi - 30 MIN | 2-5 FG | 7-10 FT | 6 REB | 11 PTS
His best game as a Pacer. The FTs alone show how active he was, but he also filled in admirably on the other end for Hibbert, who spent a lot of time on the bench in foul trouble. This is the guy who Kevin Pritchard and Donnie Walsh must have coveted so greatly this summer.
D.J. Augustin - 12 MIN | 1-5 FG | 1-1 FT | 0 AST | 3 PTS
Mediocre outing with too many missed shots mixed in.

    A little tough on Tyler. It is hard to make much of an impact on 11 minutes divided in two stints and especially when you are no longer a part of the offensive scheme. I look for him to leave at the end of the year if he can even if they want him back. As for getting in anyone’s way I did not see it.

    Not to mention he had what may have been the play of the game when he got an offensive board, passed up an open mid-range jumper and hit Green for a wide open corner 3 in the 4th for his only make of the game. When Tyler starts getting dogged for a 12 rebound and FTA PER36 in a game low in MIN where he also got an assist its a sign he’s been very, very good this year.

    I agree with Denny there is no way Tyler comes next year. Bad situation having our best to PER players playing the same position. West is our best player by far and needs the time since he’s only sure bet to score but it comes at the hands of the only bench player than brings it every night. Too bad there isn’t a clone of the things Tyler does good on a different team and we could swap him for Tyler and get more positive returns out of it.

    He is like all our bench guys. Play one of them with the starters theylook good but put them out there together or with one starter and they’re lost. Ian was awesome in his two runs with the first unit but was back to his bad self when in with the bench.

    Need to get Lance more involved on offense. At least helping to facilitate. 0 assists from him is a bit weird.

    Also, his 1 made shot came at a huge point in the game where the Pacers had to score.

    I see no reason why the Pacers do not sign TH other than another team offering way more money. They drafted him, worked through his early disability, and see him as one of the best hustle players in the league who can rebound well and get to the line. Practicing with West has made him better. My ideal signing would be West for two more years at his current salary and a long-term deal for TH–a 4 year deal that is back loaded. If Hibbert becomes a more consistent threat, then TH could move back into the starting lineup once West leaves. Long-term core signings of good to above average players with the potential to become all-star level players is what the Pacers are about…I don’t see that changing here. Not that TH has that potential, he is probably close to his max, but in terms of a core, above average player at his position who plays defense and rebounds, he fits.

    Per36 FGa down 4 years in a row, almost 4 shots down from last year and just under 6 from 2 years ago and his MP down 3 years in a row. Last year he had 6 games under 17MP over 66 games he’s already matched that this year in 15 with 2 games under 12 for first time since coaching change,

    He owes it to himself to find a better situation, West is better and needs his time so its just a bad break we are super deep at PF and weak at 3 other spots.

    Tyler Hansbrough will never be an all-star. i hope i’m wrong though. he’s the most entertaining guy to watch in the league.

    One would think since we have Ian locked up for 3 more years at 4M a season. So that has got to be the plan unless we wasted a first round draft pick on a position we didn’t need that much help at.

    I think we will use much of our open money to extend West or add a name value PF, use the 2013 draft pick to fill out the bench need along with any remaining money. The when Danny becomes a FA use that money on PG.

    I love Tyler and agree, he would need someone to make him the #1 option and that isn’t going to happen at this point, but I would love to see what he could do getting the ball with as much PT as Kevin Love.

    I agree the Pacers maybe would like to resign him but I do not see Tyler wanting to come back. Last night in the Kings game he got 10 minutes of PT in two 5 minute stints. He is getting the least amount of playing time of any bench player now and yet is the best of the lot of them. I just do not see how he can be happy and desire to come back in this scenario he is faced with. I think he will only come back if he has no other option. I hate to see it for he is the reason I watch the team as I agree with Jack Wright’s comment. “He’s the most entertaining guy to watch in the league,” that is if they would let him play in the old Tyler Hansbrough way of days now long gone by.

    David West’s stat-line explains why he got limited time though, and getting his dunk blocked was not good. I don’t think any team wants TH for any other reason than what the Pacers use him for: backup PF. So, riding reserve into the future and continuing to develop his status as energy role player with the ability to get to the line is his fate. But, if he stays with the Pacers, he would have the ability to move into the starting line-up if West leaves because he knows the system well…I don’t see him starting anywhere else.

    I agree with you completely about David West but here is the rub–it is going to be that way night after night as West is our main man. I do think there are several average teams to poor teams in the league where Tyler could get major minutes and help those teams out tremendously. What Tyler is doing now, in my opinion, is no indication at all as to what he can do. 5 minute stints is hardly enough to break a sweat and 2 shots a game is not enough to even have an idea if you are hitting or not. I will agree there are a lot of other teams where it woud be the same as in Indy. What Tyler does will no doubt depend on the offers he gets and to a large extent whether he just wants to draw a pay check or play basketball and I think we all know the answer to that one. We will know soon enough.
