San Antonio Spurs

Even before he has put on the uniform, the George Hill acquisition is paying dividends. At least twice this summer Hill went down to San Antonio to work out with Tim Duncan and a few other of the Indiana native’s former San Antonio teammates. And he was nice enough to bring along his new teammate Roy Hibbert, who expressed his happiness about being able to “pick up sum pointers” from Duncan.

Yesterday, to Mike Wells of the Indianapolis Star, Roy further expounded on his time around the best power forward in NBA history.

Hibbert said he added about 15 pounds of muscle during the offseason to help him not get pushed around. He had a tendency  last season to start  in his comfort zone in the paint only to end up five or six feet away from the basket by the time he caught the ball.

Hibbert talked about his time working with future Hall of Famer Tim Duncan in San Antonio during the offseason.

“He taught me a lot of things, in terms of things I’m not comfortable with,” Hibbert said. “Like turning and facing, shooting off the glass and just working on things that are out of my comfort zone. He took me to dinner, we ate and talked, we chopped it up. He’s a real good guy.”

Don’t be put off by those last two sentences. I know it sounds like how a girl might describe a first date with a guy who was nice and gentlemanly but has no chance of getting a second date. But, really, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

The fellas from Project Spurs recently conducted an interview with George Hill on the exhibition games he played with the ABA’s Texas Fuel. He also talks about the recent workout Hill and Hibbert took part in that was coordinated by Tim Duncan. Those went so well that Roy is headed back for more even.

Roy Hibbert and George Hill moseyed on down to San Antone to hoop with Hall of Famer-to-be Tim Duncan. They were joined by kinda-still-Denver Nugget center Nene (who is a restricted free agent that the Pacers should target), Spurs center Tiago Splitter, former Fort Wayne Flyer Ime Udoka, the legendary Sean Marks and some guy the Spurs drafted who is allegedly named Cory Joseph. Sounds like a pretty good run they’re having down in Tejas.

Indy’s Dr. Hibbert agreed, according to a tweet, which also include the swell group photo above.

Came out to San Antonio to pick up sum pointers from Tim Duncan n NeNe

Tim Duncan has arguably been the most consistant superstar in NBA history. Hibbert has arguably not been. Perhaps maybe the former was able to teach the latter something about improving in that respect.

George Hill Speaks on the Trade

by Jared Wade on July 19, 2011 at 4:30 pm · 1 comment

As we know, he has mixed emotions about leaving the title-contending only NBA team he has ever known to come home. Mostly, he will miss Coach Pop’s jokes and watching Manu play. But he’s happy to be in Indiana and looking forward to what will likely be an increased role for him as a difference-maker in this league. (via But The Game Is On)
